The courses are run during the working day for up to 5 participants per group at your place of work or for individuals at St Bartholomew's Hospital.

At the successful completion of a course the participant receives a certificate. This is valid for either six or twelve months. You will be reminded before expiry so that you can book into another course to refresh your skills.

We offer a 3 tier programme of training which begins with an Initial Course before moving on to a Refresher, six months later. Following these two sessions participants may then opt for a more authentic Scenario-based Refresher Course.

Level 1: AED Initial Course
This course provides the basic life support training with the addition of hands-on practice of using a defibrillator. We always use the defibrillator model that is sited in the client premises to ensure a prompt and effective response.

This is appropriate for people who are new to resuscitation training and to people who opt for an annual recertification.

Level 2: AED Refresher Course
This is run as a six-month refresher for people who need to keep their skills honed, such as security staff, who are likely to be on the front line in any emergency, or people who are new to resuscitation and need to develop full confidence in using these skills.

Level 3: AED Scenario Course
Participants will be challenged on the practical application of their skills and their ability to cope in a simulated crisis. This helps to develop effective time management in highly challenging circumstances as well as their leadership skills and sense of responsibility. This course follows the Initial and Refresher Courses as part of the training programme. We set a realistic scene including using actors to simulate an emergency situation. The participants know the date and time of the Scenario and are asked to draw on their skills to make decisions for the casualty. A debrief follows which focuses on good performance and training follows to tackle difficult areas.
